This is your chance to be one of 150 people to ride from Cape Town to Franschoek in a journey of the heart. In doing so you will support the 12 Unogwajas on the first day of their epic voyage riding to Pietermaritzburg in 10 days and then running the Comrades Marathon on the 11th day. In doing so they will ride and run in the footsteps of Phil Masterton-Smith who, in 1933 couldn’t afford the train fare from Cape Town to Pietermaritzburg, so he cycled up instead and finished 10th in the race. His nickname was “Unogwaja”, meaning hare in Zulu. His legacy lives on in the Unogwaja Challenge.

Each rider will be receive a pair of shoOops red socks as well as some snacks at the start and end courtesy of Southern Sun Waterfront.

ALL proceeds go to AmaBeadiBeadi Charities, the chosen charities of the Comrades Marathon.

Please note a couple of important elements on the day

1. Safety
This is the 1 non-negotiable element on the day. Please do all you can to keep safe – you all know the road rules, please stick to them. Make sure your bike has a front and back light so that you are visible in the dark as a large section of this stage will be in the dark!

2. Self-reliance
The Unogwaja team and support crew are going to be stretched to the limit to pull-off this hugely ambitious event. The biggest gift you can give them is to be entirely self-reliant. This means having your own

  • • Bicycle spares (tubes, tyre levers, pumps, etc.)
  • • Transport back from Franschoek and a contingency should you not be able to complete the cycle for whatever reason.
  • • Food and drink for the cycle
  • • Sufficient warm clothing (it will be cold)

Please take this as an opportunity to form a support team of your own. The Unogwaja cyclists will be cycling way past Franschoek (they’re going to Robertson!!!!) so will need to be on schedule and this is the priority and responsibility of the Unogwaja Support Crew.

3. Route
Cape Town to Franschoek Click here for the map of the route
Total distance: 80km

4. Parking at the start
There will be parking made available in the basement of the Southern Sun hotel.

Can’t wait!
