The Coca-Cola® Craven Week Hero of the Day

Craven WeekThe Coca-Cola® Craven week started in July 1964 and is the premier rugby tournament for school boys. For a lot of the youngsters strutting their stuff, this is an opportunity to get themselves a professional contract and a future career in the sport they love. The Coca-Cola® Craven week has grown in stature and each day you can watch games live on Supersport as you see the future of South African Rugby start to bloom.

One of my favourite initiatives is the Coca-Cola® Hero of the Day. The prestigious Coca-Cola® Hero of the Day award is presented on each day of the tournament in recognition of a game changing ‘hero’ moment.

Richman Gora from the Griffons was the first to win the award this year by a Coca-Cola® appointed panel of rugby experts after two brilliant moments in his game against the Cheetahs. The first moment was in the 7th minute of the game, whilst the Cheetahs were on the attack and camped on the Griffons 5m line. The Griffons turned the ball over and broke down the left wing, Richmond managed to sidestep his opposite number and run through the cover defense before handing the ball to gift Dlamini to score. The second moment came in the second half when he chipped the ball behind his opposing wing, collected the ball and then chipped the ball cross field for Siya Nxgesha to pick it up and score.

Fetsi Mbele, Coca-Cola® South Africa’s Senior Communications Manager: Brand Experience commented, “Congratulations to Richman Gora on being selected as Coca-Cola® Hero of the day for day 1 of the Coca-Cola® Craven Week.  At Coca-Cola® we believe that it is essential to put platforms such as the Coca-Cola® Youth Weeks in place for players of all ages to reach their full potential. The Coca-Cola® Youth Weeks are Where Heroes Are Made and for many of the players here this week, this is just the beginning of a future in the game.  I look forward to following the likes of Richman as they carve out a career for themselves in South African rugby”

We will be sharing the Coca-Cola® Hero of the Day each day of the Craven Week on both our Twitter and Instagram accounts, so make sure to follow and give these incredible talents some appreciation.

In addition to awarding the Coca-Cola® Hero of the Day to players at the u18 Coca-Cola® Craven Week, Coca-Cola has taken the “Hero of the Day” concept to social media! As an acknowledgement of the massive role that schools play in the development of South Africa’s future rugby heroes,  Coca-Cola is searching for South Africa’s ultimate school rugby hero. Whether it’s the star flyhalf, a dedicated supporter or the u13 water boy, they want to know their story. The winner and their school will be awarded with amazing rugby related prizes.
