Checking in on EFC Africa

EFC 3EFC has been on its year-end break following the brilliant EFC Africa 26 was held at the Dome in Northgate. Of course EFC 26 will be remembered for the ruthlessness of Ruan Potts in terrorizing Van Zyl to win the heavyweight championship. So the question is what has happened over the past few months of EFC slumber?

Ruan Potts

EFC 5Ruan Potts, the heavyweight champion, has relinquished his EFC Africa heavyweight title as EFC Africa has clinched a deal with the UFC promotion for six fights for Ruan Potts. The East Rand resident is a huge fan favourite in South Africa and will be a worthy competitor on the international stage as he looks to repeat the form that has seen him hold the Heavyweight championship twice. What you can bet is the likes of Andrew van Zyl, Vandam Mbuyi and Christophe Walravens all will be looking to take the opportunity to pick up the vacant belt.

Demarte Pena

EFC 2In extreme news broken just his week, Demarte Pena, the multiple record holder in EFC, relinquished his title in the featherweight division. This came as Pena refused to fight his team-mate and number 1 contender Boyd Allen. It meant that the undefeated Pena would not have a number 1 contender to fight for the foreseeable future. A decision was made that Pena would release the belt and drop to the bantam weight division where there is currently a vacancy in the title holding position. Of course if Pena does manage to win the bantamweight title, he will break another record of being the first man to be a champion in two different classes.

Current Champions

EFC 4It makes sense with all the changes about that we tap in and remind ourselves of who the champions currently are.

Featherweight – Vacant

Lightweight – Leon Mynhardt

Welterweight – Dino Baggatin

Middleweight – Garreth McLellan

Light Heavyweight – Gideon Drotschie

Bantamweight – Vacant

Heavyweight – Vacant

Title fights to look forward to

EFC 1Of course things are exciting going ahead and that kick starts at EFC Africa 27 tomorrow night when Leon Mynhardt defends his title against Frederich Naumann. When we look towards EFC Africa 28 we will arguably see the most anticipated fight in EFC Africa’s history when Soldierboy defends his title against JP “Tinkerbell” Kruger, it’s going to be epic. We also know that in EFC Africa 29 Dino Baggatin will defend the welterweight title against Henry Fadipe in a fight that is already testing the emotions of both fighters.
