Jabu List: Top 10 transfers of EPL Transfer window

To be included in this list, the player had to be purchased by a club playing in the premier league, so that would exclude the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Javier Patore, Diego Forlan, Samuel Eto and Alexis Sanchez. I considered the price, the value of the player, the need of the club as well as the impact the player is likely to make.

So here they go, in reverse order:

10.  Owen Hargreaves (Man United to Man City for free)

Owen is a world class player when fit. The gamble taken on his fitness is one that Sheikh Monsour can afford and it could turn out to be a very astute bit of business for the blue side of Manchester. He is experienced and a champions league winner, its this kind of experience that has been missing from City and although it was a surprise, City finally found value in a deal.

9. Joey Barton (Newcastle to QPR for free)

Because there is a possibility that children read this blog, I will not tell you the word that comes to mind when I think about Joey Barton. Those that know football, know which word that is. He tweets far too much, but he also almost single handedly made Andy Caroll the most expensive Englishman in history. He has quality in dead ball delivery and offers the perfect foil to Adel Tarabt.

8. Jose Enrique (Newcastle to Liverpool for 5 million)

Liverpool’s biggest problem over the past few seasons has been left back. Insua was not good enough, playing Agger wide didn’t work and the shockingly bad Konchesky didn’t fit in. Here Liverpool have signed a player with heaps of premiership experience and ability. And they got him for a good value. You have to say if you compare him to Andre Santos for Arsenal at 6.3 million (I rate Santos highly mind you), Liverpool definitely won that battle.

7. Jonathan Woodgate (Tottenham to Stoke for free)

Jonathan Woodgate is much like Owen Hargreaves, he is injury prone, but super experienced. As Stoke begin their 5th season in the top flight while also attempting to take on the rigours of Europa League, he will be the perfect leader from the back for the Rugby playing footballers. They now have Huth, Upson, Ape Boy (Shawcross) and Woodgate as centre backs, not a bad lot to choose from.

6. Ashley Young (Aston Villa to Man United for 16 million)

Ashley Young seemed to just be going through the motions playing for Aston Villa. He seemed very much like it was too easy. Occasionally he showed glimpses of the quality he has, but this was at Villa so it was few and far between. Moving to Manchester United may be the greatest move of his career. He will be playing with players who can finish crosses in Rooney, Hernandez, Berbatov and Wellbeck. He will have more space due to the speed of United and will be like a fish to water. Watch this space.

5. Mikel Arteta (Everton to Arsenal for 10 million)

Arsenal needed an experienced central midfielder that could teach Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey and Emmanuel Frimpong the ropes. They needed an experienced midfielder that could fill the void left by Cesc Fabregas. Arsenal needed a player capable of scoring and assisting from midfield. Arsenal needed a leader. Arsenal got all of these (yes, he isn’t quite as good as Cesc, but please tell me who is available that is) in Mikel Arteta. I am very excited to see him in action in the Champions League. Nothing less than he deserves.

4. Scott Dann (Birmingham to Blackburn for 6 million)

Scott is a young player with a lot of ability. Blackburn desperately needed a replacement for Phil Jones and they have got one at a profit. It speaks of Dann’s quality that he was courted by Chelsea and Arsenal this summer. I think Dann and Samba will definitely add something to the chance Blackburn have of staying up.

3.  Sergio Aguero (Atletico Madrid to Man City for 38 million)

Well he looks good doesn’t he. He was signed mainly as a replacement for Tevez, but now that Tevez stays they could form a lethal partnership. His father-in-law is the legendary Maradonna and I am sure he will be the star for Man City this season. By  far their best signing since Yaya Toure. Not higher on the list based on the fact that he is not actually needed by City (who have 7 strikers or something!) and due to the exorbitant fee always associated with City.

2. Peter Crouch (Tottenham to Stoke for 10 million)

Four words describe why this transfer is perfect for Stoke. “Rory Delap long throw”. Crouch was somewhat frozen out by Tottenham and the journey man has decided to give it a go at another premier league club. He was not cup tied for Europe and could be a handy little help for the men who think beautiful football is dating your sister. I would put money on Crouch scoring 10 headers this season as besides the long throws of Delap (who cant really be called a FOOTballer) they have quality crossers of the ball in Etherington (Great player) and Pennant (See Joey Barton)

1. Shay Given (Man City to Aston Villa for 3.3 million)

What a waste last year was for the brilliant Irishman. Man City looked to have made a brilliant 6 million signing of Given only for the emergence of Joe Hart to leave him picking splinters out of his ass. Aston Villa lost the long term services of Brad Friedel this year but have replaced him with a keeper that will earn his club points. I even think he could have been a better signing for Man Utd than De Gea. The biggest disappointment is that Shay will still not play Champions League football

There were other transfers that caught the eye, Bendtner to Sunderland, Adebayor and Parker to Spurs, Mertesacker to Arsenal, Mata and Lukaku to Chelsea, Adams and Bellamy to Liverpool.
